We thought we would make a trip to a different National Trust nature reserve today as we had a Constant family day, it was lovely. The sun was shining and the weather was absolutely beautiful. We didn’t know what to expect from Wicken Fen, but we were greeted with a great walk and lots of things to explore along the way.
When you leave the visitors center you are faced with 2 rather large, horned, cows and you can take the boardwalk path left or right and its about 3/4 of a mile route. We stopped and had our picnic by the windmill and then explored the rest of the nature around the fen land. It was really cool as there were dragonfly at every turn. Noah took a lovely photo of the windmill and of me and Isla by the windmill – I was really impressed. He is getting good!
About half way around the boardwalk trail there was a hideout, we stopped in there for some shade for a few minutes and investigated all the animals that were painted on the wall – rabbits, otters, deer and many birds. Noah and Isla loved to see all of the wildlife and we tried to explain to them if they were “quiet” they would see them through the lookouts, but they didn’t get the hint!
We then wondered on through the boardwalk trail and we came to a floating jetty, where we stopped and dipped our feet in the river to cool off. We sat watching the fishes for a little while too, and the skaters roaming around on top of the river. It was really peaceful and the children really liked sitting there watching the wild life.
They really did enjoy finding things, looking for bugs and wildlife and I think they both know the difference between a dragonfly and a butterfly now as we saw hundreds of beautiful ones today. We made it back to the visitors center and had a lovely ice lolly to cool down.
