We made some lovely nature themed biscuits, leaf shapes and snails. The colours didn’t come out very well, next time I’ll try gel colours! But you get the idea. I love the inspiration that can come from certain themes. We cut leaf shapes with a knife and rolled up sausages to make our colourful snails.

You may remember a few weeks ago I shared a fantastic Summer Holiday workbook that Harveys Furniture have create to inspire families to get creative, you can see the workbook here. They tasked me to make something creative with a nature theme and instantly I thought of leaf shaped biscuits, it is nearly autumn after all and they are good shapes for biscuits!

Ingredients

  • 250 g unsalted butter softened
  • 275 g caster sugar
  • 2 large eggs lightly whisked
  • 450 g plain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3 types of Food colouring I used red, yellow and green

Instructions

  • In a food processor, blend butter and sugar until it is light and fluffy.
  • Gradually add the lighted whisked eggs and blend until combined.
  • Sift in the flour and baking powder, blend for a couple of minutes until mixed into a dough.
  • Wrap the dough in clingfilm and chill for 2 hours.
  • Preheat the oven to 160 degrees (gas mark 3).
  • Line a couple of baking sheets with baking paper.
  • Split dough into three.
  • Mix the food colouring with the three bits of dough, using your fingers.
  • Roll out the dough with a rolling pin.
  • Cut leaf shapes with a knife.
  • Roll out sausage shapes and spiral together to make the snails back, then add another sausage at the bottom for the snail.
  • Bake for 30 minutes.
  • Leave to cool and eat. Yummy!

Notes

Use gel colouring as the usual food colouring I used did not take very well, as you can see.
