As recommendations go, this is quite a big one as I am writing an entire blog post about it. But it has really hit me. This show has been described as gruelling and tender television and I have to agree. Maid is a Netflix miniseries based on a true story. It’s a story of Alex, who is trying to get out of an abusive relationship and survive with her 2 year old daughter. It has left me feeling heartbroken and empowered, all at the same time.
Maid – the miniseries
This series is inspired by the book written by Stephanie Land, see details below, and it is based on a true story. I have no idea what is true and false, but I am completely in love with the show. I think Alex is played perfectly, I never had any doubt that these emotions were real and her relationship with her daughter is just amazing. The way the show depicts her mental breakdown with the dark well also caught me, as sometimes you do feel like you are trapped in that dark well. I am so glad she got the courage to step out of the well.
Stephanie Land – the author
Stephanie wrote the book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother’s Will to Survive and this is what the Netflix miniseries is based on. The book is essentially about her life and how Stephanie struggled with poverty and the perils of leaving her abusive partner. There are lots of similarities with the series, apart from Stephanie’s daughter was only 9months when she left her partner, and that her baby girl learned to walk in a homeless shelter.
After watching the show, it has inspired me to read Stephanie’s book. I have been researching into Stephanie too. There’s something compelling about her story that I just want to hug her and high five her all at once. The show portrays her as someone who never gave up and even though she was in a deep dark well, at times, she picked herself up and out.
Her story is quite amazing and I am so glad for Netflix as it brought me to the books. I will let you know the low down on the book when I have read it, but I am sure it will captivate me as much as the TV series did.
Do you ever watch something that just blows you away and it changes your perspective on a lot of things (you just didn’t expect)? It is crazy!
