A well-rested parent is a caregiver who’s “up for anything” – this is a lesson I’ve learned after becoming a Mummy. When I sleep well, I have so much energy to face whatever challenges the next day may bring. Rest is essential mainly when your children are very active, and you need to keep up with them. Husband too! If you’re sleep deprived, you simply won’t be up to the task. Maybe it’s time to upgrade your mattress.

I try not to lose sight of my needs for a decent repose: a cozy bedroom, relaxing music, and a comfortable mattress. I’ve always known that proper bedding made the difference – and an entire army of sleep scientists has arguments to support that! Experts advise about the importance of high-quality mattresses which help us get a better rest and, consequently, a healthier life.

So choosing the right mattress is not just about comfort, it’s actually about making a smart lifestyle decision. But when do you know it’s time to upgrade your bed? There are several signs which indicate when it’s time to part ways with your old mattress. But the most important one of all is undoubtedly the way your body feels.

Let me elaborate:

Waking up tired

You sleep more than seven hours every night, but you still feel tired and drowsy every morning. The mattress may be the source of the problem: if it’s uncomfortable, very old or lumpy it will make you roll, toss and turn all night long. It may even cause you to snore or develop sleep apnea. The ultimate test is to sleep on another mattress (for instance, at a hotel) and see how you feel in the morning. If there’s an improvement, only after one night, then you should upgrade your home mattress.

Your body makes yet another strong argument when it comes to changing your bed: over time, you may have gained a few pounds, or maybe you’ve sustained an injury which is susceptible to pressure. You need the best support if you wish to enjoy a relaxing sleep under those circumstances. Upgrading your mattress would be the wise option in such cases as well.

Pains and soreness all over your body

The mattress you sleep on is supposed to support your body throughout the night and keep your spine aligned with your neck, shoulders, and hips. But if you wake up in the morning with neck, back or shoulders pain or with an unpleasant sensation of discomfort all over your body, your mattress is most probably at fault for that: it puts too much pressure on specific areas of your body. Hence, the morning pains.

Also, inconsistencies (lumps, sagging, and indentations) in your mattress may force your muscles to contract during sleeping. So if you wake up feeling like after intense physical training, you should consider an upgrade of your bed. And it’s the necessary thing to do: over time, mattresses lose their ability to hold up your body correctly. All morning aches and pains, sore muscles or even the numbness you feel in your extremities are warnings sent to you by your body. They tell you to start looking for a new mattress.

I know that shopping for another mattress is considered a time-consuming task, but the evolution of the mattress industry and online shopping make everything way easier than it used to be. The internet provides anything you need to know about a mattress through consumer reports and unbiased analysts’ opinions; you can find the top reviews on Try Mattress when it comes to all pros and cons for any mattress you would like to purchase. Think of it as an investment in your well-being and as much needed help in your daily parental activities!
