Instagram photo challenges have become a popular way for users to showcase their creativity, connect with like-minded individuals, and build a vibrant online community. This is why I started #mummyphotoaday, for fellow Mums (or Dads) to share what they have been up to in a creative way. Whether you’re a seasoned Instagrammer or a newcomer to the platform, participating in a photo challenge can be a fantastic way to enhance your photography skills and gain exposure. Check out these 10 top tips to help you make the most out of your experience with an Instagram photo challenge.

Choose the Right Challenge

Before diving in, explore various challenges to find the one that aligns with your interests and fits your skill level. Whether it’s a daily, weekly, or monthly challenge, make sure it complements your schedule and allows for creativity. MummyPhotoADay is for the casual photographer, join in on various days or everyday, it is completely up to you. No pressure!

Understand the Theme

Pay close attention to the challenge’s theme and guidelines. Interpret the theme creatively, but ensure your photos stay relevant. This will help you stand out and make your submissions more impactful. With Mummyphotoaday you simply link the photo prompt to a photograph, sometimes this is tenuous and creative, which makes it more fun.

Plan and Schedule

Planning is key to staying consistent throughout the challenge. Create a schedule for when you’ll shoot, edit, and post your photos. This helps in maintaining a cohesive feed and prevents last-minute stress. Sometimes though, it’s just about taking a nice photo and wanting to share it.

Quality Over Quantity

While daily challenges may require frequent posts, prioritise quality over quantity. Thoughtful and well-crafted photos will receive more engagement and appreciation from your audience. The better the photo the more engagement you will get from my community.

Experiment with Editing Tools

Enhance your photos using editing tools to make them visually appealing. Experiment with filters, adjustments, and other editing features to add a unique touch to your submissions. I use Lightroom to edit photos, this is usually to brighten them up.

Engage with the Community

The essence of photo challenges lies in community engagement. Like, comment, and share others’ photos, and don’t forget to respond to comments on your own. This creates a sense of camaraderie and encourages mutual support. Every month I share my top 9 from the previous month, it’s a good way of showcasing those creative shots.

Use Relevant Hashtags

Boost the visibility of your challenge entries by using relevant hashtags, for mine you need to use #mummyphotoaday. Research popular hashtags related to the challenge theme and include them in your captions to reach a broader audience. It’s a great way of expanding your photo’s visibility!

Tell a Story

Consider the overall narrative of your photo submissions. Tell a story through your images, creating a visual journey for your followers. This can make your feed more compelling and enjoyable to follow. Look at the other photos in the challenge, what do people engage with most and create content like that.

Stay Consistent with Your Style

While experimenting is encouraged, try to maintain a consistent style across your challenge entries. This helps in creating a visually cohesive Instagram feed that reflects your unique aesthetic.

Reflect and Learn

After each month when the challenge concludes, take some time to reflect on your journey. Evaluate your growth, the feedback you received, and the connections you made. Use this experience to refine your photography skills and set new goals for future challenges. Then…. start again the next month if you want to!
