Now I am not talking about those horrible critters, fleas, that cause itching when your pets are infested. I am talking about general itchy skin. Did you know that allergies and contact irritants are the common cause of itching in dogs? Many dogs experience flare ups during the Summer months, due to the change in environment with explosions of pollen. If it doesn’t get managed, then it can become an all year problem.

Common allergens are: grass, tree pollens, dust mites and flea dirt. It isn’t a physical contact that triggers the allergies and itching. It is like when we get hay fever, so inhaling can be the cause. All things that are more likely to be around in the warmer months. 1. Do make an appointment to see your vet if your dog has an itch – broken skin can become infected with bacteria, yeasts or fungi and the more your dog scratches the more damage they can do.
2. Do wipe your dog down your dog using the microfiber cloth after they have been outdoors to reduce exposure to allergens that have attached to the coat.
3. Do talk to your vet about regular flea treatment – many skin problems are associated with fleas and they may not always be visible as they can jump on and off your dog.

10. Do wash bedding using soap flakes rather than washing powder. Washing at high temperatures also removes dust mites. Toys that can’t be washed can be popped in the freezer in a plastic bag to kill off dust mites.
