We’ve recently started playing Pickleball, and I can honestly say it’s one of the most fun ways we’ve found to stay active as a family. It’s social, accessible, and a surprisingly good workout, it’s a lot of fun. If you haven’t heard of Pickleball yet, you’re not alone — but it’s growing fast.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is often described as a mix of padel, tennis and table tennis. We play at our local leisure centre and it is on a badminton court, with the nets lowered, using paddles and a lightweight ball, making it easier to learn and less physically demanding than traditional tennis. More information about Pickleball can be found on Wiki!
The rules are simple, rallies are quick, and beginners can pick it up within a single session.
How Pickleball compares to Padel
If Padel has caught your attention, Pickleball sits in a similar space. Both are social racket sports that focus on fun and movement rather than power.
Pickleball feels especially accessible because the court is smaller and the pace is gentler, making it ideal for mixed ages and fitness levels. It’s also less intimidating if you’re new to racket sports.
Why it’s such a good workout
Don’t be fooled by how fun it feels — Pickleball gets you moving. You’re constantly walking, lunging, reaching and reacting, which builds coordination, balance and cardiovascular fitness.
Because it’s enjoyable, you tend to play longer without noticing the effort, which is often the best kind of exercise.
Perfect for families and beginners
Pickleball is incredibly inclusive. It’s suitable for teenagers, parents and even grandparents, making it a great option for active family time.
You don’t need expensive equipment or elite fitness to enjoy it — just comfortable trainers and a willingness to have a go.
Pickleball has become one of those activities we genuinely look forward to, not something that feels like a chore.
