It suddenly occurred to me on Monday that I really wanted to watch the first episode of season 8 – but it had been a long time since I last watched it. I found the episode on Sky Atlantic (my favourite channel), Game of Thrones the story so far, it is a recap of season 1 to 7, in 90 minutes. It made me remember a lot of things I had forgotten.

Here’s a short summary of the things I had forgotten in preparation for seasons 8:

Season 1

Well, I had completely forgotten how Daenerys ended up where she is today. Her evil brother, Prince Viserys Targaryen, traded her to the Dothraki tribal leader, Khal Drogo, in return for the service of Drogo’s army. She was given 3 dragon eggs at the wedding and developed a love for Drogo over time. Drogo kills Viserys but pouring boiling hot gold onto his head… quite dramatic! Daenerys becomes Mother of Dragons after walking into a burning pyre with the dragon eggs and emerging with 3 hatched dragons.

Sansa gets engaged to Joffrey, which makes you want to vomit just thinking about him! He becomes king after this father, Robert, dies. Joffrey is an evil little brat.

Bran was thrown out of a castle tower for witnessing Cersei and Jamie at it. But instead of falling to his death, as Jamie assumed he would, he did make it through only to be paralysed.

Season 2

I barely remembered anything from this season, it’s weird how I just mentally blocked it all out. This is the season where the war of the 5 kings begin: King Stannis Baratheon, Renley Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon, Robb Stark (King of the North) and Balon Greyjoy (King of the Iron Islands).

Arya, undercover as a boy, joins the night watch. Sansa is held hostage by Joffrey. Jon is on the hunt for white walkers and is beyond the wall.

King Renly is murdered by a magical shadow that priestess Melisandre gave birth too. Leaving Stannis to fight at Kings Landing, only to lose to Tyrian, who was leading the army there.

Daenerys has her dragons stolen, but she gains them back and earns enough money to buy a ship.

Season 3

Daenerys comes into her power here, her dragons are getting bigger and she gains the unsullied army. Jon is still on a quest to find out more about beyond the wall.

Arya meets the Hound, who says he is taking her back to her mother for a ransom. Sansa tells Olenna Tyrell how horrible Joffrey is, who seems very keen to find out who her grand-daughter, Margaery, is about to marry. She allows Sansa to leave Kings Landing, after befriending her. Tywin orders Tyrian to marry Sansa.

The red wedding: how could I forget this scene? Walder Frey organises an attack on the Starks and Robb, his pregnant wife Talisa, and Catelyn are all slaughtered, and Robb’s army killed. Arya and the hound witness the murders.

Daenerys frees the city slaves who hail her “mother” and again she gains followers. She is showing herself to be a true queen.

Season 4

Tyrian is ordered to death by his father as they think he killed Joffrey, at the purple wedding, I was quite happy about that storyline! The Mountain plays a large part in my memories in this season as he squished the eyes out of Prince Oberyn, exploding his head. It was a powerful moment where I suspect a lot of people sat watching in astonishment.

Arya and the hound are found by Brienne, who had been charged with protecting Arya’s mother. As Brienne and the hound fight, Arya sneaks away. Arya later finds the hound dying from his wounds and refuses to put him out of his misery. Sansa is kissed by Littlefinger who is set out on a cunning plan. Bran finds the heart tree that he saw in his visions.

Daenerys liberates all slaves, by killing their masters in the cities in Esso. She loses control of her dragons and chains them up to keep them and others safe. Her oldest dragon is still on the loose.

Jamie frees Tyrion from his cell. Cersei tells her father that Jamie is the father of her children, Tywin refuses to believe it.

Season 5

This season is completely horrific in places, I cannot believe I had forgotten these storylines. Cersei is made to walk naked and ashamed through Kings Landing as she confessed to adultery with her cousin. It was the walk of atonement, forced by the High Septon.

A crucial ending scene where Jon is killed! How can this be? I remember the feeling of “OH MY GODDDDDD” when this happened. It is absolutely crazy how attached I get to TV shows!

Season 6

Jon is brought back to life by the powerful priestess Melisandre. We find out that Jon is not Ned’s son, in fact his mother is Ned’s Sister and his father is Daenerys brother. It’s quite a shock.

Arya gets her revenge on Walder Frey for killing her mother and brother. It’s a great scene. Sansa gets her revenge on Ramsay Bolton in this series and I just love how she did it – feeding him to the dogs! She is getting a lot stronger.

Cersei blows up the Sept of Baelor with wildfire, killing everyone in it. Her son Tommen commits suicide as one of the killed was his wife! Now Cersei has no living children left.

Season 7

Sansa and Arya trick Littlefinger and he is ordered to be killed. Thank goodness – he was annoying too! Bran is now the 3 eyed Raven. Sansa, Arya and Bran are now reunited.

Jon goes on a quest to bring a white walker back to Kings Landing to prove to the entire world that the threat beyond the wall is much bigger than who gets the iron throne. They call a peace summit where the white walker is released, who runs straight to Cersei. It’s a horrible creature. She says she will help – but its not sincere. Euron Greyjoy wants Cersei, she said she will be his if he wins her the war.

We find out that Olenna Tyrell is the one who murdered Joffrey. They find the dragon glass and Daenerys says she will help Jon, if he bends the knee – which he does.

Well, I hope that’s a short and sweet (as short as I could make it) recap of some important elements that I had forgotten. If you want to watch the story so far episode you can find it on Sky Atlantic! What do you think is going to happen in Season 8?
