Sometimes the best family breaks are the ones you don’t have months to plan. Our weekend at Waxham Sands came together very last minute and happened to fall over Dean’s birthday, which made it feel like a bit of a surprise escape for all of us. We packed up the van and headed to the Norfolk coast for a few days of beach walks, hot tub chats and some much-needed time together.
We stayed in a three-bedroom Exclusive Hot Tub holiday home at Waxham Sands Holiday Park, part of Lovat Parks. The park sits behind the sand dunes on the Norfolk coast, with a path taking you from the site straight through the dunes and onto the beach. That easy access to the sea became one of our favourite things about the whole stay.
Our Hot Tub Lodge At Waxham Sands
The lodge was really well designed and felt comfortable from the moment we arrived. I loved the open-plan living space because it meant we could all be together without feeling on top of one another. There was room for us to sit, eat and relax properly, which is exactly what you want when you’re staying with teenagers.
The dressing area in the main bedroom was such a clever addition too. It gave us a useful separate space for clothes, bags and getting ready, rather than everything ending up spread across the bedroom. It sounds like a small detail, but it made the room feel much more organised and spacious.
The lodge felt high quality and had everything we needed for a comfortable weekend. More importantly, it gave us our own little base away from the busier parts of the park. Waxham Sands has a large camping area and there were lots of campers staying while we were there, but the lodge area was much quieter. Once we were inside or sitting outside, it felt peaceful and private.
A Birthday Weekend By The Sea
Because it was Dean’s birthday, the weekend felt like more than a standard family break. There was no complicated itinerary and no pressure to squeeze in lots of attractions. We could simply slow down and enjoy where we were.
The hot tub was a big part of that. We spent ages sitting and chatting, and one evening we stayed outside after it had gone dark and watched the stars above us. There is something so lovely about being in warm water in the cool night air, with nothing else demanding your attention. Those quiet moments are often the ones you remember most.
It also gave Dean a genuinely relaxing birthday. Instead of rushing between plans, we could have a drink, enjoy the lodge, walk to the sea and spend proper time together. It was simple, but it felt special.
Walking Through The Dunes To The Beach
One of the loveliest features of Waxham Sands is the direct access to the beach. The walk takes you through the sand dunes before the coast opens up in front of you. It made going to the beach feel like part of the adventure rather than something that needed packing for and driving to.
We walked, paused to throw stones and simply let Noah and Isla do their own thing. With teenagers, family time doesn’t always need to involve a planned activity. Sometimes they just need the freedom to explore, talk and move at their own pace while still being with us.
That freedom was one of the things that stood out most about this weekend. The children could have space without disappearing into separate rooms or spending the whole time on their devices. We were together, but there was no pressure to constantly entertain one another.
The beach itself felt wonderfully open, with big skies and plenty of space. Even during a busy summer weekend, walking beside the sea gave us that feeling of having escaped everyday life for a while.
Seeing The Seals At Horsey
We also made time to see the seals around Horsey, one of the experiences this part of Norfolk is best known for. Seeing them along the coastline was brilliant and made the weekend feel even more connected to nature.
If you visit, it is important to give the seals plenty of space and keep dogs under close control. They may look relaxed on the sand, but they are wild animals and should always be watched from a respectful distance.
Seal spotting is a lovely activity with older children because it doesn’t feel like something designed for little ones. Noah and Isla could enjoy the walk and look out for the seals without it feeling forced. It fitted the relaxed pace of the weekend perfectly.
Is Waxham Sands Good For Families With Teenagers?
We found Waxham Sands worked really well for us as a family with teenagers. There wasn’t a packed schedule of organised entertainment, but that was part of the appeal. The beach, dunes, wildlife and hot tub gave us enough to do while leaving plenty of room to relax.
The open-plan lodge meant we could spend time together naturally. Noah and Isla had the freedom to enjoy the space and the beach, while Dean and I could properly switch off too. It would suit families who like being outdoors and are happy making their own fun rather than relying on constant on-site activities.
It is worth knowing that this is also a popular camping and touring park, so the central areas can feel busy during peak periods. If peace and quiet are important to you, I would recommend looking at one of the lodges. Our lodge area felt much calmer and gave us the best of both worlds: the atmosphere and facilities of the wider park, with a quieter place to retreat to.
Would We Return To Waxham Sands?
Yes, absolutely. Waxham Sands gave us something we don’t always manage to find on a family break: genuine time to slow down without anyone becoming bored. We had the comfort of a beautifully designed lodge, the treat of our own hot tub and the Norfolk coast just a short walk through the dunes.
It was a fab setting for Dean’s birthday and one of those weekends that reminded me we don’t need to travel far or plan every minute to make lovely family memories. The beach walks, the freedom Noah and Isla had, our hot tub conversations and sitting beneath the stars were the moments that made it special.
