I would love to visit Scotland, it is somewhere I have never been and looks absolutely beautiful. Especially it’s capital city. Scotland’s capital city has a long and fascinating heritage complimented by a vibrant contemporary culture. This alluring combination has earned Edinburgh the title of one of the top tourist destinations in the UK. Easily reached by road or via rail routes across Great Britain, Edinburgh is overflowing with incredible experiences for visitors of all ages.

Families travelling with children will delight in the many child-friendly attractions the city has to offer, from historic sites with a rich and sometimes gruesome heritage to modern museums that play with the mind. Whether your kids are crazy for all things ghostly or mad for the outdoors, there are endless things to do in Edinburgh that will keep the whole family happy! Check out four of the city’s most amazing attractions for children.

Edinburgh Castle

First and foremost is the unmissable Edinburgh Castle which towers down over the cobbled streets of the city centre. Almost 1,000 years old, it is one of the most important historical sites in Western Europe and has acted as fortress, prison, and royal residence. Kids can become explorers for the day and follow clues around the castle to uncover its intricate past, all the way down to the dungeons where pirates where imprisoned and to the ramparts where Mons Meg still stands.

Edinburgh Dungeons

History is brought to life at Edinburgh Dungeons, a fantastic follow-up to visiting the castle. Here, live actors recreate the most gruesome and gristly moments in the city’s history, backed by a spooky soundtrack and special effects. It even includes a thrilling underground ride! Edinburgh Dungeons is a completely immersive experience that is guaranteed to engage your children, although due to the nature of the content and the frequent darkness it is not recommended for kids aged below ten.

World of Illusions

Once you have had your fill of the past, get back to the present with a bang at Camera Obscura & World of Illusions. Get lost in a maze of over 100 interactive exhibits spanning five floors, many of which feature mind-bending illusions that will leave both children and adults baffled! You will finally end up at the historic Outlook Tower where you can tour Edinburgh’s streets without taking a step.

Edinburgh Zoo

As well as these indoor attractions, Edinburgh has plenty to offer those who prefer to be in nature. As well as the popular climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat, children will love visiting Edinburgh Zoo to meet the many animals that live here. With special seasonal trails and talks on the vital conservation conducted here, there is a lot to entertain kids of all ages. Highlights include the pandas, many different species of primates, and lively lemurs that spend days swinging between the trees.
