After a long stint of remote learning, online tutoring, and self-learning, in-person learning is a new experience for many of the youngest children in the UK. We're only just beginning to uncover the extent to which the disruption of their formative years has impacted their education. Research is underway in every area from halted social skills and capacity for rule-following, to retention, and the ability to concentrate.ย

January 2021 and that dreaded news hits our ears: "schools are closing to all students". I can deal with all other restrictions but closing the schools to the children just breaks my heart. They were so sad, Isla cried herself to sleep and just knowing how much they will miss their friends and routine. Lockdown 3 is a lot different to the first lockdown. I know I am not the only one to think that. In the Spring it was bright, sunny, dry and getting out in the garden was easy. On the 9th June 2020 we found out that the former caretaker at the children’s first primary school had been charged with 21 offences in relation to children. I have not been able to write anything as I didn’t want to hinder the court case, but today he was sentenced; he only got 5 years! No parent should have to go through this; the guilt, the anger, the disgust. He fooled us all. I am grateful I got to hug them tight throughout homeschooling, it comforted me for that period of time to know they were safe at home.
