This is a question I ask myself every year and when I look at booking our family Summer holiday it is always the same answer for us: late August is the cheapest time to go abroad. I thought I would expand on the other times of year to go away, for people with younger children, or indeed no children and some little tips I have picked up along the way.
1. June: The Early Bird Advantage
June is an excellent choice for those who prefer a quieter, more relaxed holiday. The summer season is just beginning, which means you can enjoy pleasant weather without the intense heat of July and August. In many popular destinations, June offers a perfect balance of warm temperatures and lower humidity. Plus, because it’s still early in the season, you’ll encounter fewer crowds, allowing you to explore popular tourist spots without long lines or the hustle and bustle of peak season.
Top Tip: Make the most of the cheaper holiday packages outside of the school holidays when your children are under 5.
This time of year is perfect if you are travelling with younger children, not school age, as you will not be confined by the school holidays. Prices for flights and accommodation tends to be lower compared to the height of summer, making June a more budget friendly time to go away.
2. July: Peak Summer Experience
July is the quintessential summer month, offering the full experience of the season. If you’re someone who loves the energy and excitement of summer, this might be the best time for you. The weather is reliably hot in most destinations, making it ideal for beach holidays, outdoor adventures, and festivals.
However, July is also the peak tourist season, so be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices. Popular destinations like Mediterranean beaches, European capitals, and national parks will be bustling with visitors. If you enjoy socialising and don’t mind the crowds, July’s vibrant atmosphere can make for an unforgettable holiday.
It’s also a great time for families, as most schools are out and many attractions offer special events and activities for children. The TUI Kids’ Clubs hotels are perfect for that time of year, great family fun for everyone and lots for the children to do! Just be sure to book your accommodation and activities well in advance to secure the best options.
3. August: Late Summer Bliss
August is another popular month for summer holidays, particularly in Europe, where it’s traditional for many people to take extended vacations during this time. The weather remains warm, and the sea has had all summer to warm up, making it perfect for swimming and water sports.
While August can be busy it’s also a time when many cities and towns host local festivals and events, giving you a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture. The crowds might be significant in tourist hotspots, but if you venture off the beaten path, you can still find quieter, more peaceful spots to enjoy.
In some destinations, particularly in southern Europe and the Mediterranean, August can be very hot, so it’s essential to plan your activities accordingly. Early mornings and late afternoons are best for exploring, leaving the middle of the day for siestas or cooling off by the water.
Top Tip: Late August is the cheapest time to go away in the Summer Holiday break (compared to the rest of the 6 weeks).

4. September: The Sweet Spot
For those who prefer a more laid-back holiday experience, September is often considered the ideal time to travel. The summer rush has ended, meaning fewer tourists and more affordable prices. The weather remains warm, especially in southern Europe, but without the intense heat of July and August.
September is perfect for those who enjoy a slower pace, with the added benefit of still being able to enjoy outdoor activities and beach days. The sea is still warm from the summer sun, and many tourist destinations remain open but are much less crowded.
This month is also great for exploring cities and cultural sites, as the temperatures are more moderate, making sightseeing more comfortable. Additionally, many destinations hold harvest festivals and food events, allowing you to experience local flavors and traditions. Egypt is a really warm destination to visit in September, with temperatures around 37°C.
The best time to go on a summer holiday largely depends on your preferences, I hope the above has given you some inspiration for booking your holiday next Summer.
