Moving a full household to another address can be very complicated. Not only do you have to worry about physically transporting your personal effects, but also larger household goods, like your sofas, beds, refrigerator, and everything else. Combine the stress of moving these things with rallying together your loved ones and getting them prepared for the move, and it’s clear to see why moving house is as stressful as it is. This post plans to explore this topic in more detail and will tell you how you can ensure your move is stress-free.

Lease a Storage Unit

One of the best options if you want to organize a stress-free move is to lease a storage unit. A storage unit gives you somewhere to put furniture or personal effects you’ve got no place for, or that you need to temporarily put somewhere, i.e., because you have sold them and they have not yet been collected, or you are planning on giving them away. It’s possible to get 24 hour storage units or ones leased for longer periods of time. Make sure that if you do lease a storage unit, you find a reliable company to rent one from. Here are some tips you can use to do that:

  • Read online reviews. It’s always essential to read reviews before you commit to working with a specific storage unit leasing firm. This is because a company’s reviews can tell you a lot about it and help you to quickly determine whether they are the right one for you or not.
  • Consider your budget. It’s also important to think about how much you can reasonably afford to spend on a storage unit rental. A good way to calculate a budget is to work out your monthly incomings and outgoings, combine them with your savings, and then you should be able to work out how much you have.
  • Length of time. How long do you plan on leasing a storage unit for? The process of renting a storage unit itself can be stressful if you do not answer these questions. The length of time you need to rent it for will have a significant impact on how simple the process of leasing a unit is. If you do not know how long you need a unit for, you won’t be able to negotiate with the company offering a unit to you from a position of strength.
  • Size of unit needed. What do you plan on storing inside your unit, if you do rent one? If you have lots of things to store, you naturally need the largest unit you can get your hands on. A good way to ensure a unit is the right size is to take measurements of the things you plan on storing inside of it, then compare those with the measurements provided for the unit by the company that is going to rent it to you.

Create a Checklist

To ensure your move goes to plan, you need to create a checklist. Write down every single thing you plan on taking (and need to do), so that you can effectively prepare yourself for the big day. By creating a checklist, you will be able to tick individual tasks or items off the list and make sure nothing is left unfinished or undone.

Declutter Rooms

Gradually begin to declutter the rooms in your house. If you do not, you could end up faced with a lot of mess to clean up when you eventually do come to cleaning and tidying up. Decluttering over the weeks leading up to your move is, without a shadow of a doubt, the easiest way to save yourself time, effort, and even money on your move.

Hire Movers

Are you going to move your belongings yourself? The process of moving things between houses can be very time-consuming. You must hire movers. A moving company can work with you to make sure your things arrive at your new home on time and in good condition.

Book a Rental Truck

You don’t always have to hire movers. It’s perfectly possible to move things yourself, although it can be very difficult and time-consuming. If you do want to move things yourself, book a rental truck. You’ll need this so that you can transport your belongings from your old place to your new one.

Gather Supplies

You will most likely need cardboard boxes in order to make your move as seamless as possible. How else are you going to transport your things? Gathering supplies together may seem like a difficult task, but it’s relatively straightforward once you know what to spend money on. There are guides specific to moving supplies that you can use.

Ask for Help

Don’t hesitate to ask your loved ones for help. Asking loved ones for their support can be an effective way to mitigate the stress of moving house alone. They can help you to carry and move things, and also support you with long-distance driving.

Pack Early

Pack your belongings as early in the moving process as you can, or at least start packing. The sooner you start packing, the easier it will be for you to ensure that everything arrives on time and is ready on the day of your move.

Label Boxes

Label boxes properly. If you do not label boxes, you could end up making the mistake of mixing things up or putting them in the wrong places. It’s essential to properly label boxes. Don’t just scribble on them. Make sure you are very specific with labeling so you can find and organize your things properly.

Before you move house, it’s necessary to take a final walkthrough. If you did create a checklist, this is the time for you to retroactively go back through it and verify that everything has been done properly. Make sure you remember to fill your checklist out as you begin ticking things off of it, so nothing is left blank.

Moving house is never simple. However, you can take steps to make it less difficult. Some of those are mentioned here. Make sure that you properly prepare for your move, so you can eliminate unnecessary stress. Take the guidance given here to do that. Check out my other family home articles for more inspiration.
