It is no secret that buying your family home can be very expensive and complicated, there are so many things to consider. From making sure it is protected, ensuring it is safe inside and making sure your family are healthy. I have put these tips together on things to do when you purchase your family home.
Home insurance is vital
You never know what might happen; we had a sewage pipe burst in our previous home and if it wasn’t for the home insurance, we would have lost a lot of money on fixing the property and replacing the items within it. Specialist home insurance might also be handy if you have specific things you want to insure.
Boiler and heating cover
The first thing we did when the children were born was to get home cover on the boiler and pipes. There is nothing worse than being without heating and hot water when you have a family of small children. This is the second priority on your list. There are lots of great cover options out there, we use British Gas for ours.
Risk assessment
Do your risk assessment when you move into the property? Is the gas fire safe (if you have one)? Ours wasn’t and so we got it shut off immediately. Do you have carbon monoxide detectors scattered around the house? Are the batteries in the fire alarms? Small things but could be really important things down the line.
Check specialist insurers if there is anything non-standard about your home
Many mainstream insurers have one-size-fits-all policies, but many people have properties or circumstances that don’t quite fit. This could be due to flood risk, renovations or extensions going on, or even personal situations such as poor credit history. Some comparison sites such as insuremy.co.uk work with specialist insurers which may be better suited or more competitive for your needs.

I added accidental damage to my home insurance as I am rather accident prone!
