This week, Isla officially became a teenager – and I still can’t quite believe it. Thirteen feels like such a big moment, and watching her grow into a confident, clever, and creative young woman has been one of the greatest joys of my life. We wanted to make sure her birthday was just as special as she is, filled with the things and people she loves. Celebrating Isla’s 13th birthday has been absolutely fabulous.
Looking back at 13 years of Isla
It only feels like yesterday that Isla was toddling around in tiny pink wellies, collecting stones and chasing butterflies in the garden. Over the years she’s grown into such a passionate and driven girl, especially when it comes to her gymnastics. Seeing her progress through the classes and now thrive in the advanced group has been incredible to watch. She gives everything 100%, and her determination shines through in everything she does.
How we celebrated Isla’s 13th birthday
This year, we gave Isla more of a say in how she wanted to celebrate—and of course, she had ideas ready! She opted for a relaxed day surrounded by family on her actual birthday (and I surprised her with a shopping trip), a few of her closest friends had a party with her the week after, and a cake that truly reflected her style for our family get together. She also has people to see still and she loves that her birthday isn’t just a one day thing!
Here’s what made her birthday so memorable:
- The cake: A beautifully decorated Spring/Summer themed cake with edible details, her favourite colours, and plenty of sprinkles (naturally).
- Presents she loved: From a new outfit to air pods to keep her entertained, Isla was thrilled with everything she received. She loved all her special and thoughtful gifts.
- Family day out: We took her to see Stranger Things: The First Shadow in London, followed by dinner at Pizza Express. She absolutely loved it (and so did I).
- Photos and fun: I snapped so many pictures of the celebrations — smiles, silly faces, and the moments when everyone sings happy birthday and she lit up like a star.
A note to my lovely Isla
Isla, you are such a light in our lives. Your kindness, your sense of humour, your strength—it all makes us so proud to be your family. Thirteen is the start of something exciting and new, and I know you’re going to handle it with your usual mix of grace and determination. Keep being unapologetically you. We love you more than words can say.
These milestones feel big for us as parents too. Time is flying, and I’m so grateful for every giggle, every cuddle, every heartfelt chat. Isla’s birthday was a gentle reminder to celebrate the everyday magic—and to hold on tight to the memories we’re making together.
