For an adult in England studying outside school, A-level maths comes with up to three costs: a course fee, an exam entry fee and, if you book late, a late fee. Free adult funding for maths stops at level 2, which is GCSE level, so it doesn’t cover A-level. Budget for all three before you enrol, and book early enough that the third never applies.
A-level maths is also the most-entered A-level in England. Ofqual’s provisional figures for summer 2026 show 109,875 entries, up 3.9% on 2025. It’s the only A-level subject with more than 100,000.
Why isn’t A-level maths free for adults in England?
The free adult entitlement in England covers English and maths up to level 2, and A-level is level 3. Adults aged 19 and over without a GCSE grade 4 or equivalent in English or maths can study those subjects free at a further education college. That funding doesn’t extend to A-level maths, or to any other subject.
Some colleges run adult A-level classes. Fees and funding vary by college, so ask the college directly.
For most adults, then, A-level maths is something you pay for. The question is what you’re paying for, and when.
What costs does a private candidate pay for A-level maths?
A private candidate pays for the exam entry, and usually for teaching too. Taking a second A-level alongside maths can lower the per-course fee, since some providers, CloudLearn included, discount multi-subject enrolments. Economics is a common partner for maths. Ofqual’s provisional summer 2026 figures show A-level economics entries in England up 10.7%, to 46,365.
What does self-study for A-level maths cost?
Self-study costs the exam entry plus books, and not much else. Pearson publishes past papers and mark schemes for 9MA0 on its website at no charge, and CloudLearn offers an exam-only booking for private candidates who don’t want a course.
The saving is the course fee. The cost is feedback. Nobody marks your working, so a method error can sit unnoticed for weeks (and in A-level maths, a weak topic tends to resurface in later ones).
If your Higher tier GCSE maths felt comfortable, self-study is realistic. If it didn’t, pay for teaching, or refresh GCSE first.
How long does A-level maths take to study?
CloudLearn recommends 360 guided hours for A-level maths and gives 24 months of access. The Pearson Edexcel specification (9MA0) is assessed by three two-hour written papers covering pure maths, statistics and mechanics, with no coursework. Exams run once a year, in May and June.
From early October 2026 to mid-May 2027 is about 32 weeks, so 360 hours means roughly 11 hours a week. Aim for May 2028 instead and it’s closer to four.
With no coursework, CloudLearn asks for six months’ booking notice rather than eight. For a May 2027 sitting, book by November 2026 and the late fees won’t apply.
