When it comes to customizing your home, frames are your best friend. You can pick up interesting frames at thrift stores and garage sales and you can stain them, paint them, or use them naturally. They are cheap, so if you mess up, it is no great loss.

You can find lovely fabric pieces for cheap at fabric stores. These look fantastic in frames. Use them on stairwells and in halls or places that are hard to decorate. Using fabric inside a frame gives you many decorating options you probably have not thought about before.
Use one of your wonderful frame finds to make some great trays. Larger frames make great coffee table pieces. A tray for creams and lotions in the bedroom is nice and they can make perfect candles and soap holders for the bathroom.
An unfinished or rustic frame is perfect. If you do not want to paint it, leave it as is. Place a nice piece of fabric inside that looks elegant to give it the chic look you want. Your rule of thumb is, the more rustic the frame, the more elegant the pulls. If you want to paint the frame, as in the one above, go for it. Get as fancy or as plain as you like.
Some people want to paint the frames gold or white and instead of fabric, glue in Mother Of Pearl Mosaic tile.
Be sure your handles are securely fastened. Note. This is a picture frame tray. Do not attempt to use it as a serving tray. The frame will not hold that much weight. It is a decorative piece.

Add your own style
Everyone has their own style. If you try to copy your friend’s style that is what you are going to get. A home that feels like your friend should live there. Of course, how it looks is important but how you feel is more important.
DIY Coffee filter wreath
Kimberly shares with us that she gets the most fun from super fun, super cheap DIY projects like the one shown above. This takes no time to make. You can add bows if you want. You can make it less full (this is about as full as you can make one though) and if you want to get real creative you can use water-color dye to make fun spring wreaths. Brown coffee filters make an awesome fall wreath. This is such a great idea for home decor tips.
Here is all you need to make your wreath:
- glue gun and lots of glue sticks
- a pack coffee filters (100-150 depending on the size of your wreath and how tight you pack the filters together) – £1.00-1.50
- a cheap wreath form
As you are gluing the filters make sure you are filling in all the holes and if your glue gun gets really hot, be careful not to melt your wreath.
Tips to help with renovating costs
It is easy and fun to talk about all of the fun things we want to do decorating. But it was not always fun and games. If you have followed Kimberly on her journey, you know her house was in need of a lot of work before she and her spouse got to this part. So, for those of you who are just beginning this journey, we will recap just a few of the many ways she saved big money while making her dreams come true. For more details, click here.
Their home would need all new carpeting, upstairs and down. This was more than buying carpet. The old carpet and padding had to be taken up, and taken away. Instead of paying for that service, Kimberly ran an ad advising that anyone who would pull up the old carpeting, padding and remove it, could have it for free. She had a huge response. The end result was, one couple took the entire upstairs and one couple took the entire downstairs and in short order, her home was ready for the new carpet at a cost of zero for preparation work.
When you are talking to a contractor, let’s say for sheetrock for example. Get a price on the room you need repaired or replaced. But then get a price on everything you will need to have done. You may find he will give you a much better price in exchange for all of the work. Negotiate the price and ask for payments or an auto-withdrawal from your account monthly. You can save thousands of dollars because you gave him extra work.
Barter. Trade your services for someone else’s and get things done for free.
