Waitrose sent us some fantastic items to make and decorate our own Cadbury’s Easter eggs and lots of tasty treats to decorate our chocolate eggs – we had enough left over to make our very own chocolate cupcakes. It was so much fun making, baking and decorating with the children but it was a chocolatey mess – everywhere!

It was simply wonderful to watch the children getting involved and decorating their chocolate eggs, which I made from the egg moulds that Waitrose sent out, I did have to stand back and keep myself from taking it off of them and wiping their hands down every 5 seconds. They really enjoyed decorating and eating all the goodies that came with it. Because the children are so young they didn’t wait to finish their eggs before showing off the decoration, they simply ate as they went. Look at their chocolate chops!

It was nice to see them concentrating on something for a while, together too, it is nice seeing them getting a long as siblings and doing fun activities together. Even if I did need to wash down the playroom afterwards! Small price to pay for seeing them being together and working on their decorating skills. To use the egg moulds it is really easy, but you need to allow a day for the chocolate to set and be thick enough. After melting the desired chocolate, using the back of a spoon you smother the moulds with the chocolate, make it as thick as you can. Then when the area is covered, place the moulds, rounded side up, on baking paper and leave in the fridge to set. Repeat this process until your eggs are the thickness you require, it took around 90 minutes for each layer to set before adding more chocolate. Once the eggs are thick enough and set, it is the fun part. Waitrose have some great ideas and inspiration for things to do over Easter with the children.

Let the children loose, let yourself loose or if you are a perfectionist make your chocolate eggs look amazing, we had a box of goodies to decorate our chocolate eggs with including different varieties of chocolate. The children just chose to throw everything they could at their egg and cupcake, and eat as you go:

This was Isla’s finished example, at 23 months I was impressed that so much of her chocolate egg was in tact, compared to her brothers:

Waitrose sent us a huge collection of goodies to decorate the eggs and cupcakes with including yummy Cadbury’s chocolate for melting into chocolate eggs and Lindt 85% cocoa chocolate for baking with. We had decorations from fizzing candy to fudge pieces and we made our cupcakes look extremely tempting, we were really lucky to have such yummy goodies sent to us.

RECIPE – Chocolate cupcakes with chocolate fudge icing

We used a recipe I have made before, not one with cocoa powder but melted chocolate, depending on how long you cook them for you can make chocolate gu cakes with the recipe. Yummy!
