Back in the good old days, about three millennia ago, the sun was the most worshipped of objects. You praised it for your healthy crops; you blessed it for the food on your table; you cursed it for your misfortunes; and you let it explain all the wonders of the world.

Nowadays, we worship the sun in a different way. As soon as the beaches of Blighty hint at even a sliver of sunlight, it’s tops off time as you bathe in that warm glow.

But this year it’s time to praise the sun in a different way. Craft your garden into somewhere beautiful and you won’t have to rush to the beach – you’ll have everything you need for an ace day right on your doorstep.

With that in mind, we’ve found a few design ideas to make your summer special.

Take the outside inside

Conservatories have long been the dream of suburban families, giving you all the warmth of the sun without suffering the winds and chills of the outdoors.

Indeed, when the sun kicks into gear, there are fewer better places to lounge than in your specially constructed conservatory.

Pricewise, an extension of this scale will set you back a few grand. And if you begin construction now, you’ll be just in time for summer.

Just make sure you clear construction with your local council and let the neighbours know they might hear some loud noises for a while. After all – you don’t want to become a neighbour from hell in your quest for the perfect summer.

A focal feature

Every room in your house should have the perfect focal point. From the telly in your living room to the statue in your hall, you need something to capture the eye and impress your guests. So why isn’t your garden doing the same?

Invest in a water feature, gazebo or some top-notch topiary to give a centre to your garden you can enjoy.

Colours and flora

Did you ever read The Secret Garden when you were a child? And did you want to jump inside the book to experience those marvellous colours and miraculous scents? Well, it’s not as hard as you think.

Start planting your summer bulbs now and you’ll be able to enjoy them in full bloom come sunny season, sights and smells and all.

Don’t overload the space – no one wants to take a machete with them every time they enter their garden – but find enough complementary colours to make it a joyous lounging spot.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what you can do for the perfect summer garden. Got ideas of your own? Let us know in the comments below!
