Can spirituality promote a healthier and more fulfilled life for your family? Research shows that spiritual people are less prone to a range of self-destructive behaviors for example drug and alcohol abuse, smoking, and being involved in crime. On top of this, those who hold spiritual values dear more often report a greater total life satisfaction and lower levels of stress and anxiety. In a number of studies, spirituality has been shown to reduce feelings of depression, boost the immune system, and improve blood pressure, showing that it is useful for good health in people of all ages.

Spirituality and Physical Health

Medical and scientific professionals once avoided the subject of spirituality as a factor in physical health, however recent findings have compelled many to take a second look. Studies show that religion and faith can help to promote good physical health and fight disease due to the social support offered by belonging to a religious group and the additional coping skills gained by having faith and engaging in prayer. Although research linking spirituality and physical health hasn’t yet been carried out on children, studies on adults show that those who hold to a faith had less physical disability, lower levels of depression, and even lower death rates.

Spirituality and Mental Health

Religious and spiritual beliefs can play an important part in how people deal with the ups and downs of everyday life. No matter your personal opinion, there is no denying that those with faith in a higher being tend to have a better method of coping with hardship and faith that everything happens for a purpose. Faith and spirituality can give people a sense of their own purpose in life and guidelines for living, giving individuals and families a set of beliefs and practices which can help them to fight feelings of helplessness and enable them to regain a sense of control during tough times.

Choosing a Religion

If you have not been brought up to follow any particular religion, it can be difficult to make a decision if you’re considering joining a religious group and becoming more spiritual. There is no right or wrong religion to choose from – at the end of the day it all comes down to your personal convictions and which set of beliefs resonates with you the most. There is a wealth of information available about the different religions practiced today, each with their own similar yet distinct set of beliefs (you can find out more about these on this site).

All religions have communities and support groups, which in and of themselves can help to improve health and well-being. Each religion has their own leader, god or gods, such as Jesus in Christianity, Allah in Islam, and Agni in Hinduism. For many people, becoming part of a religion is more of a calling and less of a decision. Speaking to people of different faiths and researching religions can help it to become more clear to you where your spirituality lies.

Spirituality and faith is able to promote a healthier family life and improve individual well-being.
