We all have a vision of what our ideal fitness would look like and feel like. Alas, the thinking bit is the easy part – the difficult part is actually making it a reality. While you’ll struggle if you’re stuck in daydream mode, there are some tried and tested methods that’ll help you to slowly inch in the right direction. Here are some tips on how to reach your fitness goals:

Make it a Priority

You can’t have everything in life, or at least not all at the same time. If you want to put more energy into getting your fitness on track, then you might need to sacrifice some things in other areas of your life. For example, if you want to spend an hour in the gym three times a week, then you might need to decline some social invitations, or even lose out on sleep if you’re going to go before work. You have to make it a priority. This is the biggest difference between people who get into their ideal shape, and the people who don’t.

Part of Your Lifestyle

You’ll find it much easier to reach your desired fitness if it’s a fundamental aspect of your lifestyle. Instead of making exercise just one more thing that you sometimes do, make it as imperative to your existence as, say, eating breakfast or spending time with friends. This a way to build up your health from the ground up, rather than top-down. There are a million and one small changes you can make to improve the quality of your lifestyle, such as opting to walk rather than drive or avoiding sitting in front of the television for hours on end. If you make a healthy lifestyle just part of your being, you’ll be going with the current, rather than trying to swim against it.

Have a Goal

One of the main reasons people don’t follow through with their fitness mission is that they’re not really working towards anything. You’ll have great enthusiasm for your new-found lifestyle in the early days, but that won’t see you through in the long-term. To keep momentum alive, it’s best that you have a target in mind. This can be the difference between giving up when you get a little bored, or powering through and carrying on.

Healthy Eating

Many people do just fine at the gym, but then still don’t get anywhere close to their ideal shape. Why? Because they haven’t changed their eating habits. Indeed, some people even increase the amount of food they’re eating, because they’ve drained their energy at the gym. Eating freshly prepared, healthy meals is a critical part of a lifestyle geared towards optimal fitness. If you haven’t given much thought to what you’re eating before, then just remember: it’s never too late to learn! Start with a few easy to make meals to make you comfortable with being in the kitchen, and then progress. You’ll soon find that eating well isn’t just easy; it can be fun!

Healthy Lifestyle

We mentioned earlier about having a healthy lifestyle, but what does that look like, exactly? To figure that out, we’ll need to look at the current most popular lifestyle, which is pretty sedentary. We drive to work, sit in front of a computer all day, and then return home to recover from the day on the couch. It’s normal, sure, but it’s not necessarily healthy. So look at making small changes to your lifestyle. Could you cycle to work? Could you take the stairs rather than the lift, or take a brisk walk on your lunch break? These small changes might sound small, but they do make a big difference.

Find an Exercise You Love

You can’t blame yourself if you find yourself getting bored at the gym. They’re pretty boring places, really! To stay on top of your exercise, you’ll need to find ways to make exercise more exciting. If you’re intent on going to the gym, then look at loading up a good podcast or playlist to see you through. It’s better to find an activity that you inherently enjoy, however, since when you do it, you’ll fundamentally be having fun — the fitness side will be just a bonus. You’ll never get bored.

Get Additional Help

Don’t forget that there are plenty of ways to get some additional help when you’re trying to get fitter. For example, after the gym, you could use protein shakes to build more muscle. Instead of a full meal, you could drink a healthy and slimming meal replacement drink. There are also medications that reduce the amount of fat the body absorbs; get some further information, and find the one that is right for you. The more we understand about the human body (and we know a lot), the better these additional tools for reaching are optimal fitness are becoming.

Beware the Cheat Days

You can feel motivated to do healthy things 90% of the time, but that last 10%? Ah, it’s tough. We might overeat, or skip the gym, or whatever else. While a cheat day here and there isn’t going to be the end of the world, or derail your overall fitness progress, it is important that they don’t become too common. Just be aware that it could become a sliding slope if you’re not consciously trying to avoid it.

Stay Encouraged

People sometimes give up their fitness goals within the first few weeks, but here’s the thing — if they just wait a few more weeks, then they’d begin to see the improvements that they’ve been working so hard for. So stay encouraged. It won’t be too long before you begin to see and feel a difference, and it only gets better from there!

Don’t Beat Yourself Up

Finally, remember to go easy on yourself. Nobody gets it completely right at the first time of asking; it’s a learning experience. Brush off your mistakes and vow to do better, and eventually you’ll have it all figured out, and be on your way to being the best, healthiest you.
