A romantic getaway can be a chance to spend quality time together while travelling somewhere new. The destination and type of break that you choose will depend a lot on the type of couple you are. This post outlines just a few tips for planning the ultimate romantic getaway.

Decide between an urban or rural getaway

City breaks can make for some fun dates. You have lots of sights to see, restaurants to dine in and lots of culture to explore. However, if you currently live in a city, you may prefer to get away from the hustle-bustle.

Rural getaways are typically more slow-paced and relaxing. They can be a chance to explore the great outdoors and get away from people. This could be great for focusing on the two of you, however if you already live somewhere remote, you may prefer the buzz of a city.

Look for accommodation aimed at couples

There are many hotels, cruises and resorts aimed at couples. Some of these may be adults-only – if you’re taking a break from the kids or simply don’t want to be surrounded by families, these could be a good choice. You may also be able to meet other couples – this could be ideal if you’re an outgoing couple that likes to socialise.

Consider renting somewhere out for just the two of you

Alternatively, you could get away from other people and rent somewhere for just the two of you. This could be anything from a remote cottage to an apartment.

You could even go camping in the wilderness or rent a camper van. The latter option could even allow you to go on a road trip and visit multiple places.

Book some activities

It’s worth booking a few activities in advance so that you have something to do. The types of activities you book are likely to depend on the type of couple you are.

You could opt for activities that cater to share interests such as wine tasting, hiking or visiting a gig. This way, you’re both certain to get excited about the activity.

Alternatively, you could try activities that neither one of you has ever tried before. Trying new things together is a great way to learn more about each other – this could be anything from ice skating to riding a horse.

Leave room for spontaneity

You don’t want to schedule too many activities into your trip. This could make the trip stressful.

Allow some time for spontaneity – it could be worth allowing a few hours to go on a walk to see what you can find, or spare some time just chill in your accommodation.

Google ‘what time is the sunset?’

For the perfect romantic setting, plan to end an evening by watching the sunset together. This could be perfect for your last evening together.

Allow yourself a lie in

Unless you both love getting up early, make sure that you haven’t got too many activities booked early in the morning so that you can get up leisurely and feel relaxed. If you’re staying somewhere for a night, this could be particularly important – instead of racing off the next morning, make sure that you don’t have to start thinking about heading back until midday.

The last time me and my husband went anywhere just the 2 of us was about 21 years ago before our eldest was born, we’d hoped we’d be able to do this sort of thing once the kids were grown up a bit, (never had anyone to look after them for us), now our youngest has severe learning difficulties, so no romantic getaways for us but hopefully lots of family getaways to look forward to once covid has done a bunk!
