If you have managed to buy a new home or indeed are renting, there are some things you should do as soon as you move in. While the housing stock for purchase is relatively low at present, there are still people moving. It may be an exciting time for you or you may have had to move for other reasons. No matter the reason for your move, below are some things to do to ensure your move is a successful one.

Inspect Your Boxes

Whether you have used a moving company or you have moved your belongings, it’s important to check the contents to assess whether there is any damage to items. Of course, if you have used a moving company you will need to take a note of damage along with pictures if you wish to have the issue resolved quickly.

Utilities

Before moving into a new home it’s best to sort out the utilities such as heating and lighting. However, you will want to check that they now have your details. Another good idea is to go round the house checking to ensure the heating and lighting are working as well as ensuring the water is running too!

Organizing and unpacking

Get yourself organized and decide where the boxes need to go before you start unpacking. First, pack all the essential items and sort out the rooms that you need immediately such as the bedroom, kitchen, and sitting area. It will take time to unpack all your boxes so only opening the essential ones will ensure you get a good night’s sleep and can get washed the next morning!

Inspect the House

A thorough inspection should be undertaken whether you have just purchased the property or if you are rending. Get to know the place and look at everything in detail. This is helpful as it will allow you to see if you need to consider work immediately on items or whether you just need to decorate, if you require some tips on decorating, this is a great post to check out. Another tip is to change the locks of your new property, especially if you have purchased it. It’s a very easy thing to do, you just need to call a locksmith who will change your locks in no time at all.

This will give you peace of mind and ensure that you are the only people who have access to your property.

Connect your Appliances

If you have moved your fridge, freezer, cooker, and dishwasher, it’s best to connect these as soon as you can. The kitchen is an important part of the home so doing this will ensure you have access to all the appliances you need to make food, wash dishes, and store items.

Change your Address

Now that you have moved, it’s good to register your new address. From friends to banks, they will all need to know your new address. With online banking, it’s often easy to amend your address. Remember though there are many companies who will need to be informed such as insurance companies. Make a list and work through it.
