The short answer to this is, yes. You have created a person. It has exited your body. You can do anything! The long answer is still yes, but it’s going to take a lot of hard work, organization, and a great support network. Here’s some great ways to make getting your masters as a mum a realistic goal.

Study Online

Online study is more popular than ever. Companies now view a master gained online with the same respect they would an in-school qualification. Many universities now offer online masters degrees, in anything from nursing to online MBA degree courses. Studying online gives you the flexibility and freedom to further your education while looking after your baby.

Study Part-time

Part-time study is available from schools and online. Northeastern University offers some fantastic online business degrees, such as their online MBA programs. A part-time master’s degree might take longer, but it would ensure you could devote your time to both your degree and your family.

Get Help!

How many times do family and friends offer to babysit? How many times have you said no? Stop! It’s ok to ask for help. Make the most of it. Remember it’s also good for your baby to spend time with other people, building up relationships and getting out of their comfort zone. If you don’t have friends and family that can help, consider hiring a baby sitter. A few hours will be all you need. You’ll be amazed at how much more you can get done in an hour without a baby!

Routine

A routine is really important to a baby. If you’re studying this is even truer. Get your baby into a bed time and nap time routine. Then, you always know that whatever else is going on, you have these times to use as you wish.

Look After Yourself

Take a break every now and then. It’s no good studying if you’re too tired to take anything in. Once a week, just totally stop. Put the baby to bed and allow yourself some ‘me time’. Do whatever it is that makes you feel relaxed. Be that reading a book, having a glass of wine in the bath or chatting with friends. Do it! Also, make sure you’re taking care of yourself generally. Get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet and try and get some exercise when you can, even if it’s just a long walk in the fresh air. You’ll be a better mother and student because of it.

With a little planning, and a lot of hard work, you absolutely can earn a master’s degree. It may take you a little longer, but if it’s what you want, there’s nothing to stop you. Just remember to accept help when it’s offered, and take some time out for you occasionally. As a mum it’s very important to take a break sometimes; this is even more important if you are studying. It won’t be worth it if you burn out on your way to graduation.
