What with my first baby, Noah,  turning 7 yesterday, I thought it would be good to write down some helpful tips for new Mums out there. Having your first child is a very scary and exhilarating time. There is so much information out there to help you get through it, and your mother and other family members to help you and give you advice. The most important thing you need to remember is that you are not alone, and that help available โ€“ all you need to do is ask. Knowing about what you need to do to prepare for your first baby can help you in terms of stress and getting ready for your little oneโ€™s birth:

  1. Learn About Your Pregnancy

Science is amazing. So amazing in fact that you can find out what parts of your baby are developing during each week. You can track your babyโ€™s progress and monitor your own. Youโ€™ll also have a list of symptoms so you can double check and make sure that what youโ€™re feeling is normal, or if it should be checked out by the doctor. The same holds true for the birthing process.

  1. Get Everyone on Board

Once youโ€™ve done your research itโ€™s time to get everyone on board with your pregnancy and birth plan. Donโ€™t assume that itโ€™s your way of the highway, however โ€“ veteran moms have already been there, and their advice should be listened to. Find people and doctors you can trust so that when the time comes, youโ€™ll be prepared and ready for the unexpected.

  1. Be Prepared for the Birth

You should be aware and ready in case contractions happen. That means having a go-bag packed (and probably kept in the car, so you can make a hasty getaway to the hospital). It also means knowing the best and fastest way to the hospital โ€“ you donโ€™t want to get lost on the way there!

  1. Prepare to bring your first baby home

Before you give birth, you should also be prepared to bring your baby home. Setting up the babyโ€™s room is a great and fun activity for couples to do before the birth of their child. It also gives you time to get the necessary toiletries and equipment like baby car seats. Make sure you stock up by buying baby toiletries from Mothercare. Before you give birth is also a good time to organise with your friends and family, as having help in the first few weeks after giving birth can be really important for new moms, but you donโ€™t want to overdo it with the guests!

Having your first child can be a scary time, but if you trust in your family and even your friends youโ€™ll get through it glowing. Their advice will help you prepare and plan so that everything is in order. Be prepared for how the pregnancy will affect you, how birth will go, and be prepared to bring your baby home before you ever start having contractions. Being prepared will save yourself from a lot of stress and let you enjoy your pregnancy even more.
