We have spent the first part of our half term holiday in glorious sunshine, Wales is always raining and cloudy when we have been here before, but not this week. The coats and wellies have had to take a back seat and the swimming costumes have taken centre stage. It’s been lovely.

Saturday morning we took a walk out of the front door of the cottage and walked around Blaenau Ffestiniog – there are slate mountains all around us and they look huge in the backdrop of the cottage. We walked around the mountain for about an hour and got to the top of a mountain overlooking a beautiful view of lakes, larger mountains and slate mounds. The children had a lot of fun spotting all the sheep along the way and trying not to stand in the sheep poop.

Saturday afternoon we walked from Porthmadog harbour to a lovely little beach at Borth Y Gest, I think it is a little secret here, there is a little stream that feeds into the sea and the beach was surrounded by a wall so it felt safe. It wasn’t busy either. As we walked in to the beach the sunshine beamed and it really felt lovely to sit on the sand in the sunshine.

On Sunday we went back to Borth Y Gest and spent the entire afternoon building sandcastles and playing in the sea, it was lovely to see the children running in and out of the sea – they are a lot braver than I. After we soaked up some sun on the beach we walked back to Porthmadog harbour where we sat crabbing for an hour. It was lovely to sit there and relax in the sunshine, we almost caught a crab but he kept dropping off our bait. The children did get slightly frustrated as we did not catch any crabs – but there is always tomorrow.

It’s amazing how different Wales is in the sunshine, we feel like we are on a completely different holiday to what we expected. It is lovely and the children are loving it too. Perfect half term fun!
